Belvoir Castle

The present owner of Belvoir Castle is the Eleventh Duke of Rutland, who lives here with his young family. The Duke is the direct descendant of Robert de Todeni who built the first castle, the property having been inherited by the same family for almost a thousand years.
Spring Garden
From the elegance of the Elizabeth Saloon and the majesty of the State Dining Room to the delights of the Regents Gallery and the military splendour of the Guard Room, Belvoir possesses one of the most stunning interiors of the period. Below the terrace of the Castle sloping lawns lead down to the Rose and Statue Gardens which are elegantly laid out round a central fountain. The Statue Collection terraced into the hillside includes work by Caius, Cibber – Sculptor to Charles II.
The Castle also contains a notable collection of furniture, porcelain, silks and tapestries, sculptures and paintings. There are examples of fine French furniture, Italian sculpture alongside paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Holbein and Poussin.

Belvoir Castle in Grantham

The Belvoir Castle is a beautiful castle located in Grantham, Leicestershire.  Grantham is a market town very famous as the birthplace of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher, and the place where Isaac Newton went to school. It is within short walking distance of an ancient Roman road, and was the scene of Oliver Cromwell’s first advantage over Royalists during the English Civil War at Gonerby Moor. Grantham is also notable for having the first female police officers in the United Kingdom, in 1914, and producing the first running diesel engine in 1892, and the UK’s first tractor in 1896.
It is nice to visit new places in summertime and considering all what mentioned before about Grantham, why not to go and have a walk in such an interesting town, if you never went.
Of course, I would not want to miss to visit the Castle. Especially in August there are some very entertaining events like Story telling and Fireworks going on at the Belvoir Castle.
Just visit the website for more info and have a good weekend!

Belvoir Castle – The history

Belvoir, meaning beautiful view in French, dates back to Norman times.
“The name “Belvoir”, is in fact, a Norman import by the French-speaking conquerors, though the native Anglo-Saxon population was unable to pronounce such a foreign word, preferring to call it “Beaver Castle”. Belvoir Castle is still pronounced “Beaver” — despite its spelling — to this very day, which may actually go a long way to explaining the age-long animosity between the insulted French and the traditionalist English…” said Michael Zlatokovsky.
The castle was rebuilt by the wife of the 5th Duke of Rutland and this is when it gained its Gothic look. The architect James Wyatt was chiefly responsible for this restructuring, and the result is a building which bears a superficial resemblance to a medieval castle, its central tower reminiscent of Windsor Castle. The present Castle is the fourth building to have stood on the site since Norman times.
The Castle contains many notable pieces of art and includes paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Holbein and Poussin. It houses outstanding collections of furniture, porcelain, silks, tapestries, French furniture and Italian sculpture. Sculpture extends outside into the Rose and Statue Gardens which are elegantly laid out round a central fountain. The Statue Collection terraced into the hillside includes work by Caius, Cibber – Sculptor to Charles II.
